NATO Biometrics Technical Interoperability Workshop

This is the Calling Notice for the 8th NATO Biometrics Technical Interoperability Workshop (NBTIWS), which will be hosted by the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency) on 29-30 November 2022, in The Hague, The Netherlands. The event is sponsored by the NATO HQ, Emerging Security Challenges Division (ESCD), through the Defence Against Terrorism Program of Work (DAT POW) (Reference A), and it reports to the NATO Biometrics Programme Coordination Group (as per Reference B).

The workshop is open to NATO Nations, Organizations and Missions, as well as to Governmental Organizations and Industry representatives.

The NBTIWS will provide a unique opportunity for specialists to discuss the present Biometrics state of affairs in different organizations and to debate on the future development of NATO Biometrics. It will also offer an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate current interoperable biometrics capabilities and to talk over two very important trends and challenges in the biometrics realm – artificial intelligence and deep fake.

ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS

The workshop will be organized over two days: 29 and 30 November 2022, with Monday, 28 November and Thursday, 01 December being reserved for travelling. The first day will be dedicated to operational and technical discussions concerning the current state of affairs of biometrics in various partner organizations and debates about the biometrics development with a focus on NATO. On the second day, the emphasis will be on artificial intelligence and machine learning in biometrics, mainly on face recognition and deep fake. The participants will also have the opportunity to conduct/ attend a technical demonstration with the biometrics capabilities involved in the Northern Spirit 22 exercise, which is planned to occur in September-October 2022 timeframe, in Iceland.

Accommodation:

Participants are encouraged to lodge in the Carlton Beach Hotel (https://www.carlton.nl/en/beach-hotel- scheveningen), which is the same location where the NBTIWS is organized. There is a special NATO rate if the booking is done directly on the hotel website with the NATO code 01NATO (and mention that you will be attending the NATO Workshop hosted in the hotel).

In addition, NCI Agency has special rates with The Hague Marriot hotel, Hilton The Hague and Bilderbeg Europa hotel (please see the document accompanying the Calling Notice).

Transportation:

Personnel expenses for transportation are to be met by sending units/organizations.
The most frequented airport is Amsterdam SCHIPHOL. From the Amsterdam Airport, participants are advised to travel by train to The Hague Central Station, then either by tram or by taxi/ Uber to the hotel they are booked in. Another option would be to rent a car or to travel by taxi or Uber from the Amsterdam Airport straight to the hotels.
If you are lodged in Carlton Beach Hotel and chose to travel by tram from The Hague Central Station, please take tram number 9 in the direction Scheveningen Noord, and get off at the last station called “Zwarte Pad”. Meals & welfare

Lunch and dinner can be served on site at the hotel’s restaurant.
We plan to organize a non-hosted dinner, on 29 November. More information will be available on site.

Security

The overall security classification of the event is NATO UNCLASSIFIED. No Security Clearance is needed, however it is mandatory for the participants to register their attendance, no later than 18 November 2021, at the link provided at paragraph 2.

Dress code

The dress code for the entire event will be smart casual.

There is no conference fee requested for participating to the NBTIWS.
