Exciting Opportunities for Atlantic Canada’s SMEs in the Defence and Security Sector

Published: December 9, 2025

The Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII) is a $357.7 million initiative delivered by Canada’s regional development agencies to support Canada’s defence and security needs while bolstering regional economic development.

ACADA is pleased to share that the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) has launched the Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII), with applications now open. Apply here.

This program represents a significant opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and organizations across Atlantic Canada to strengthen their role in Canada’s defence supply chains, expand capacity, and seize new growth in the rapidly evolving defence and security sectors.

What This Means for SMEs

  • New pathways to growth: SMEs already active in defence, or those looking to enter the supply chain, can access support to expand operations, boost productivity, and compete for contracts in Canada and beyond.
  • Sector-wide impact: From training and simulation to marine technology, sensors, cyber resilience, and dual-use innovations, Atlantic firms are already demonstrating leadership. RDII will accelerate this momentum by helping more companies achieve certifications, adopt advanced tools, and scale into global markets.
  • Significant investment: ACOA will deliver $38.2 million over three years starting in 2025-26, ensuring sustained support for businesses and organizations across the Atlantic region.

The initiative is open to:

  • SMEs and businesses
  • Not-for-profit organizations, including industry associations
  • Indigenous-owned businesses and organizations
  • Provincial and municipal governments

Atlantic Canada is home to a growing community of innovators ready to contribute to Canada’s defence and security needs. The RDII provides the resources and support to help our region’s SMEs compete globally, create high-value jobs, and drive economic growth.
